Induction Heating

Core Principle
Induction heating is a non-contact heating technology that leverages electromagnetic induction to generate heat inside metal materials. Its working process can be broken down into three key steps:
  • current is passed through an induction coil (usually made of copper tubes), creating an alternating magnetic field around the coil.
  • when a conductive metal workpiece is placed within this alternating magnetic field, Eddy Currents (circular electric currents) are induced inside the workpiece due to electromagnetic induction.
  • The Eddy Currents encounter resistance as they flow through the metal, and according to the Joule Heating Effect, this resistance converts electrical energy into heat energy, causing the workpiece to heat up rapidly from the inside out.
Key Advantages
  • Rapid Heating: Heat is generated directly inside the metal, so the heating rate is 2-10 times faster than traditional methods. For example, a carbon steel workpiece can be heated to 1200℃ (forging temperature) in just a few seconds to tens of seconds.
  • Uniform Temperature Distribution: The alternating magnetic field can be controlled precisely, ensuring that the internal and external temperatures of the workpiece differ by less than 5℃ (for small and medium-sized workpieces), avoiding uneven heating-induced cracks.
  • Energy Efficiency: The heat utilization rate is as high as 85%-95% (traditional flame heating is only 30%-50%), as there is no heat loss caused by open flames or heat radiation to the surrounding environment.
  • Non-Contact & Clean: There is no direct contact between the induction coil and the workpiece, eliminating contamination from fuel residues or oxidation. It is suitable for clean production environments (such as medical device manufacturing and food processing).
  • Precise Control: The heating temperature, heating time, and heating zone can be adjusted accurately by modifying parameters like the frequency of the alternating current (1kHz-1MHz) and current intensity, meeting the needs of different processes.
Core Components
  • Induction Power Supply: The core component that converts industrial frequency AC (50/60Hz) into high-frequency alternating current. It determines the heating efficiency and temperature control accuracy of the system.
  • Induction Coil: The “energy transmission medium” that generates the alternating magnetic field. Its shape (e.g., cylindrical, rectangular, annular) and size are customized according to the shape and size of the workpiece (e.g., a ring-shaped coil for pipe heating, a flat coil for thin-plate heating).
  • Cooling System: Since the induction coil and power supply generate heat during operation, a cooling system (usually water cooling) is required to maintain their normal working temperature. High-quality cooling water (with low conductivity) can prevent coil corrosion and power supply failure.
 Typical Application
  • Metal Forging & Heat Treatment: Heating metal billets to forging temperatures (as in induction forging);performing heat treatment processes like annealing, quenching, and tempering on workpieces to improve their hardness and toughness (e.g., quenching of automotive gears).
  • Welding & Brazing: Local heating of weld joints to achieve welding (as in induction welding for pipes and automotive components);brazing of small parts (e.g., brazing of carbide tool bits and drill pipes).
  • Food & Pharmaceutical Industry: Sealing the mouths of food cans (induction sealing to prevent leakage and extend shelf life);sterilizing metal containers in pharmaceutical production (clean and pollution-free heating).
  • Electronics Manufacturing: Soldering of electronic components (e.g., micro-welding of semiconductor chips);heating of lithium battery electrodes during the manufacturing process.
Induction Heating Flame Heating
Heat is generated directly inside the metal, with a heating rate 2-10 times faster than traditional heating methods; for example, a carbon steel workpiece only takes a few seconds to tens of seconds to heat up to the forging temperature of 1200℃ Relies on thermal radiation and air conduction for heat transfer, with a long heat transfer path; it takes several minutes to heat a carbon steel workpiece of the same specification to the forging temperature
With precise control via an alternating magnetic field, the internal and external temperature difference of small and medium-sized workpieces can be controlled within 5℃, effectively avoiding local overheating or underheating Greatly affected by air flow disturbance, the surface temperature of the workpiece fluctuates significantly, with a temperature difference often exceeding 50℃, which easily leads to crack defects in the workpiece
The heat utilization rate is as high as 85%-95%, with no heat loss from open flames or the environment, resulting in extremely low energy loss The heat utilization rate is only 30%-50%, with a large amount of heat lost through flue gas emission and environmental radiation, leading to serious energy waste
Adopts a non-contact heating mode, with no pollutants such as fuel residues or oxide scale generated; no open flame operation, resulting in low fire risk Flue gas and waste residue are generated during the heating process, which easily pollutes the workpiece surface and operating environment; open flame operation poses a high fire hazard
By adjusting the current frequency (1kHz-1MHz) and current intensity, the heating temperature, heating duration and heating area can be precisely controlled Relies on manual adjustment of fuel supply for temperature control, with a temperature error exceeding ±50℃, making it difficult to meet the demand for precise heating
Suitable for various conductive metals (such as steel, copper, aluminum, etc.), especially for the heating needs of small and medium-sized precision workpieces and special-shaped workpieces Mainly applicable to large rough-processed workpieces and scenarios with low requirements for dimensional accuracy and surface quality
